Hi guys,

SuperMutant Magic Academy was a webcomic that I posted here between 2010 and 2014. A book, which collected all of the strips that appear here, plus new strips, plus a 40-page concluding story, came out earlier this year. To everyone who supported this project, bought a book, or came out to events on the tour, THANKS!

I am going to stop posting on this tumblr! You can follow my illustration and comic work on my other tumblr (jilliantamaki). If you liked this, maybe you’ll like that, etc.

HEY! So some newsy bits:

♪ Hazlitt is running my new series of short comics, called Early Stories. Here’s the first one, Darla! It is semi-SFW.

♪ SMMA appears on the Publishers Weekly’s Best Comics of 2015 list!

♪ I am going to be at Comic Arts Brooklyn on Nov 7. Signing at the Youth in Decline table at 2, and the Desert Island table at 3.

♪ Later in November, I will be at Kaigai and Design Festa in Tokyo. Details TBD. I post updated itineraries on this page of my website and blow-by-blow action on Twitter.

Hi all, not a lot to report but I did want to say THANKS for coming out to the bookstore tour events and TCAF. It was great meeting and/or catching up with you guys! It’s nice to meet the mysterious “readers” we’re always talking about. And to put an IRL face to an Twitter handle!

SuperMutant Magic Academy is #10 on the NYT Bestsellers List this week! This is cool! My mom is impressed!

What’s next? CAKE (Chicago), ELCAF (London, England), ALA (SF), San Diego Comic-Con, and Autoptic. I post all the specifics on my website. And, like, all my other places online. I dunno. You know how to use the internet.

I interviewed my literal hero, Jillian Tamaki, for The Hairpin. We talk about D&Q’s new collection of her SuperMutant Magic Academy webcomic, for which she’s now touring. Just after I wrote the questions I also got in the mail her Frontier #7 story “SexCoven” from Youth In Decline, which I loved too. This woman!! I can’t even. Except I had to, even, to ask her questions.

Will Super Mutant Magic Academy end with the release of the book? Apologies if this question is annoying/has been asked before.

For now, yes! The book version of SuperMutant Magic Academy (on sale now!) includes a 40+ page extended story that wraps up some of the plotlines and hopefully makes it worth shelling out the extra $$. Here’s a page with all sorts of info and where to buy, blah blah blah. :-)

Last week was a big week!
It feels almost unbelievable to write, but This One Summer, which I co-created with my cousin Mariko Tamaki, won a Caldecott honour and a Printz Award.
Thanks to librarians, for these honours and, just, generally. To be perfectly honest, Mariko and I never thought we were making YA books when we started with SKIM. It was our publishers and librarians who connected us with this wonderful audience. Thank-you for that. <3
